Once Upon A Time In The Midlands – film festival review

THE FINAL PARTof Shane Meadows’s Nottinghamshire Trilogy, after Twentyfourseven and A Room For Romeo Brass, is the best so far and likely to find the director the place in the hearts of British cinemagoers that he has always deserved, writes Eddie Harrison.

As the title suggest, it’s a kitchen-sink, suburban drama, but with a Sergio Leone, spaghetti Western-style.

Robert Carlyle stars as Jimmy, a hopeless Scottish loser with a protective streak towards Shirley (Shirley Henderson), who’s currently being wooed by the improbably dressed and coiffured garage manager Dek (Rhys Ifans).

Around this bizarre Northern love triangle runs a variety of Meadow’s misfit characters, including Kathy Burke as the shell-suited Carol, Ricky Tomlinson as a Country and Western singer, Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer as a couple of kung-fu circus clowns and Vanessa Feltz as herself.
